Description

Rio Xingu crevice cave small is a reconstruction of an original crevice cave from the Rio Xingu.

The natural habitat of several inhabitants of the Rio Xingu consists of a rocky landscape with stones that form crevices and sandstone-like formations with small and larger pebbles that form numerous shelters.

At the L-number days 2023 in Hannover, Leandro Sousa brought along three different pieces of rock with caves from the Rio Xingu.
Using a 3D scanner, a 3D model was printed of these different pieces, after which plaster molds were made. This mold is therefore virtually identical to the original piece of rock from the Rio Xingu. The mold is now used to create similar fissure caves that are very close to the original. This Rio Xingu crevice cave small is one of the 3 available pieces; Rio Xingu crevice cave small, Rio Xingu crevice cave medium and Rio Xingu crevice cave big.

What is a breeding cave?

Breeding caves are used as a breeding- and hiding spot for plecos, catfishes, shrimps and crayfish. In addition, they also offer shelter for eggs and babies.
Breeding caves can be manufactured out of different materials and can have different shapes and sizes, depending on the animals needs in shelter and breeding.

Material and manufacturing

All our breeding caves are handmade products, manufactured from fired clay (1090 °C). Therefore small differences in size and appearance are possible. Of course it is taken care that the outside measurements and the entrance diameter fit the ordered product.
Due to the nature of the material, the surface of the cave is slightly rough, which benefits the adhesive characteristics of most fish eggs without damaging the egg shells. This also minimalizes the eggs risk of getting washed out of the cave.

For which fish do I use those caves?

The caves are, because they have been recreated from an original and natural piece of cave from the Rio Xingu, ideal for  Hypancistrus zebra “L46” and flat-build Loricariidae such as Pseudolithoxus and Lasiancistrus.
The medium variant is ideal for larger animals such as L082, L168 or Ancistrus ranunclus “L34”.
All those fish prefer breeding in crevasse caves above other types of caves.

How many caves do I need?

We advice to use for the most breeding groups 1,5 caves for each fish. The best is to mix different sizes and forms of caves. If there are more caves than fish, it gives the possibility to choose for the preferred cave, which minimizes interspecific fights for breeding- and hiding spots.
For breeding pairs it is usual to have 1 breeding cave per animal.

In addition, it is also possible to order other sizes or color of the breeding cave crevice.
Even special caves, other than the standard measurements is possible.
