Description
Nitrate resin is an fine-grained, basic anion exchange resin which is used to remove nitrates or nitrites from drinking- aquarium or pond water. It filters only nitrates and nitrites out of the water. Besides nitrates, the resin will not remove other substances. Also the pH parameter does not change.
The anion exchange resin is approved for use in the food and drinking water sector.
With proper use the resin will last for 15 years. 1 liter of nitrate resin is good for approximately 250 liters of water.
This type of nitrate resin keeps the absorbed nitrate, even when saturated. With full saturation it no longer absorbs nitrates. Most available nitrate resins open the cells after being saturated, this will cause a nitrate peak.
What are the profits of the nitrate resin?
✓ Resins last for 15 years
✓ No nitrate peaks
✓ Water is getting clearer/cleaner
✓ Less algae growth; also works great against beard algae
✓ Ecological balance; means more stability of the water
✓ Fish grow better (nitrate is a growth inhibitor)
✓ Fish show better coloration
✓ No change in pH value
How do I use Nitrate resin?
You can put the resin in a bag. Take care that the mesh of the bag is fine enough that the resin doesn’t go through it. We use, none colored, pantyhoses of 80 Denier.
After filing the bags we advice to wash the filled bags under lukewarm or warm tap water before putting it into the aquarium or pond.
You can place the resin-filled bags into the aquarium filter or next to a water outlet, so that they are flushed through good. In addition, it is also possible to place the resin in a own, separate filter.
When the nitrate values go over 20 mg per liter, the resin is saturated. In this case you have to clean or regenerate the resin.
You can easy test your nitrate levels with the Colombo Aqua NO3 Nitrate test.
Regeneration is necessary on average every 2 to 6 weeks, depending on how many nitrates it has to absorb.
How can I regenerate the nitrate resin?
– Fill a bucket with lukewarm or warm water.
– Add 100 grams of sea salt or table salt per liter of water into the bucket. The best is to use salt without Jodium.
– Place the resin packed in the bag into the bucket with the saltwater.
– Ventilate the bucket well with an air pump and air stone.
– Within a few hours, the water in the bucket will turn a tea-like color. After 12 to 24 hours the water in the bucket is dark brown/black similar to the color of coffee. If the water turns filthy or after around 12 hours, we recommend to make a new clean mixture of saltwater to put the resin bag in. Don’t forget to ventilate it again. During this procedure foam can appear on the surface. So please take care where to position the bucket to not make a mess.
– When the water is really dark brown/black the resin is ready and regenerated. You can rinse the resin filled bag with lukewarm or warm tap water and place it back in the filter or aquarium.
Pay attention:
– When you are going to treat your aquarium or pond with salt, you must first remove the nitrate resin.
– The resin has to be moist and should never get dry. When it is dries out it loses its effect.
– Avoid sunlight exposure and product freezing.
– In case of spillage, floor may be slippery.
