Alder cones

Description

Alder cones are the fruits of the black alder tree (Alnus glutinosa). They look like a small pine cone.

They are also perfect natural accents for paludariums, vivariums and terrariums.

 

What is the effect of the alder cones in the aquarium?

Alder cones release important humus and tannins into the water which lowers the KH of the water. They also cause a slight drop in pH value.
Humic substances in the aquarium ensure that plant growth is stimulated (they release nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur into the water). It is also known that alder cones help against beard algae.
The tannins make a positive contribution to your animals because they have an anti-fungal and light antibacterial effect and they help shrimps and lobsters with molting. In addition, it also prevents mold formation on eggs.

The pigment dissolve into the water which gives the water a natural, but clear reddish/brown coloration. This coloring is only temporary. After some days or weeks the color will disappear.

 

Natural products such as Catappa leaves, Guava leaves, Mulberry leaves, Lotus pods and Thelambu Pods promote fish health, color brilliance, breeding and stress reduction.
Because they are natural products, they can vary in shape and size. Each piece is unique.

How much cones do I use?

You can use around 1 cone per 10 liter aquarium water.  After 1 or 2 months the effect of the cones will vanish (this also depends on how much cones you use, how much water changes and your type of filter).

You can let the alder cones in the aquarium till they are completely gone or eaten. Shrimps, lobsters or young fish will like to eat them. Some fish will even lay their eggs between the cones.

In addition of putting the alder cones into the aquarium, you can also put them into the filter. In that case it is smart to put them in a pantyhose or filter bag for example.

Pay attention:

If you use active carbon the effect of the alder cones can be reduced. Because of that we advice to not use active carbon in combination with the cones. Also nitrate resin will take away, a part, of the reddish/brown water coloration.

 

Our cones are dried, so if you store them dry you can hold them for a unlimited time. You can directly use them.
