Description
Colombo Aqua NO2 Nitrite test is a accurate droplet test to determine the Nitrite/NO2 value in aquarium or pond water.
One package contains 40 tests.
What is nitrite?
Nitrite is the in between product of breaking down ammonia into nitrate, by the nitrifying bacteria in your aquarium or pond. Fish, rotting plants or food produce/create the harmful ammonia, which gets then converted via nitrite into nitrate.
Nitrite is chemically abbreviated as NO2.
Nitrite is very toxic and dangerous to all aquatic life.
Too high concentrations of nitrite are created in a new aquarium or pond , if there are filter problems or if there is too much left over food.
Because nitrite is so highly toxic to all aquatic life, it is very important that the nitrite content in the water is 0.
What are the symptoms at the fish?
The next symptoms can possible been seen.
– Fast breathing
– The skin of the fish is red and irritated
– Increased mucus production in the skin
How can I break down the nitrite?
The nitrite value can become too high in the first time after starting up a new aquarium or pond. In this case it is important to look regularly to the water values and do water changes.
The only way to get you nitrite down is to do water change. Keep doing this for a few days and stop feeding or feed less in these days.
Never clean your filter during nitrite problems!
What is the optimal nitrite content in the aquarium?
An optimal nitrite content in all types of water is simply 0 mg per liter.
If the nitrite is 0.5 mg per liter, it means that not enough bacteria are present and so it is advisable to add a bacteria product and change the next up coming days a part of the aquarium- or pond water.
At a nitrite content of 1.0 mg per liter, nitrite can become dangerous. It is advisable in this case to change 25% of the water first. Also keep changing water for the up coming days and try to feed a little less.
At nitrite contents of 2.0 mg per liter or higher, 50% or more water must be changed immediately. Change the water minimal until the nitrite content is 0.5 mg per liter or lower. Change water for the up coming days and stop feeding.
