Description
Colombo Aqua NO3 Nitrate test is a accurate droplet test to determine the NO3/Nitrate value in aquarium or pond water.
One package contains 40 tests.
What is Nitrate?
Nitrate is the ultimate end product of the breakdown of ammonia by the nitrifying bacteria in your aquarium or pond. Fish, rotting plants or food produce/create the harmful ammonia, which gets then converted via nitrite into nitrate.
Nitrate is chemically abbreviated as NO3.
Luckily nitrate is not immediately toxic to fish and is therefore not a direct problem for the health of the fish, such as ammonia and nitrite. But high concentrations can hinder the growth and reproduction of the fish in the long term. Especially for young fish it is a grow-blocker.
In addition, nitrate is one of the most important nutrients for plant but can also indirectly cause algae problems.
In a pond this is expressed by either completely opaque green water or large amounts of thread algae. By aquariums, algae can completely cover walls, windows, stones and even plants.
What are the symptoms at the fish?
The next symptoms can possible been seen.
– The fish don’t eat good
– Fast breathing
– Slow growing
How can I break down the nitrate?
The nitrate value can become too high in aquariums or ponds with a lot of fish. In this case it is important to look regularly to the water values.
If the nitrate is too high you can do a partial water change. So a lower nitrate value can be reached by doing water changes or, another option is to use Nitrate resin. This resin filters the nitrates out of the water.
What is the optimal ammonia content in the aquarium?
An optimal nitrate content in all types of water is simply 0 mg per liter but we recommend keeping the nitrate content below 50 mg per liter.
Especially with young or an overpopulation of fish we recommend the use of the Nitrate resin.
