Description
HS Aqua NH3/NH4 Ammonium/Ammoniak test is an accurate test to determine the ammonium and ammonia value in freshwater-, marine aquariums or ponds.
One package contains approximately 40 tests.
What is Ammonia?
Ammonia is a very harmful waste product of the fish which causes diseases and acute fish death. The fish excrete ammonia through the gills and their urine. Also rotting plants or fish food can cause ammonia.
Ammonia is chemically abbreviated as NH3.
Too high concentrations of ammonia are created in a new aquarium or pond, if there are filter problems or if the fish stock is too high.
Because Ammonia is a waste product its highly toxic to all aquatic life. And so it is very important that the ammonia content in the water is zero.
What are the symptoms at the fish?
The next symptoms can possible been seen.
– Breading heavy; dying of gill plates gives a reddish/purple color of the gills
– Whitish, cloudiness skin
– The fins fray
– Bleeding in- and outside of the body
How can I break down the ammonia?
Fortunately, bacteria in the filter break down ammonia via nitrite to the non-toxic nitrate.
These bacteria are the so-called nitrifying bacteria of the genus Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter, and are therefore essential for a healthy aquarium or pond.
The best way to house these bacteria in your aquarium or pond is through a biological filter.
A new and “clean” biological filter does need time to allow enough bacteria to grow in it.
You give this growth a huge boost by adding the right bacteria from the moment the biological filter is started.
What is the optimal ammonia content in the aquarium?
An optimal ammonia content in all types of water is simply 0 mg per liter.
If the ammonia is 0.5 mg per liter, it means that not enough bacteria are present and so it is advisable to add a bacteria product and change the next up coming days a part of the aquarium- or pond water.
At an ammonia content of 1.0 mg per liter, ammonia can become dangerous. It is advisable in this case to change 25% of the water first. Also keep changing water for the up coming days and try to feed a little less.
At ammonia contents of 2.0 mg per liter or higher, 50% or more water must be changed immediately. Change the water minimal until the ammonia content is 0.5 mg per liter or lower. Change water for the up coming days and stop feeding.
